Uganda's Jacob Kiplimo wins Chicago Marathon with one of the fastest times in history

For a good while Sunday, Uganda’s Jacob Kiplimo was on a world record pace for the Chicago Marathon. While he ultimately fell short of that record, Kiplimo still walked away with the win.

Kiplimo finished with a time of 2:02:23 to win the event. It was a dominant performance from Kiplimo, who remained close to the head of the pack the entire race. After trailing last year’s winner John Korir early on, Kiplimo made his move around the halfway point. From there, he was able to lengthen his lead.

Kiplimo was threatening for the world record as late as the 22nd mile. But he slowed down as the race reached its final stage. By the time he got to the next mile marker, Kiplimo was already out of world-record range.

His finishing time of 2:02:23 ranks seventh all time. It also set the Ugandan national record.
