What Josh Heupel said about penalties in Tennessee football's win vs Arkansas

Josh Heupel smiled while offering a subtle assessment of the officiating in Tennessee football‘s win against Arkansas.

“When it is a 10-1 penalty differential, you are changing the way the game is played, too,” Heupel said. “Guess we have to play a lot smarter.”

Tennessee was called for 10 penalties for 78 yards, while Arkansas was charged with one penalty for 10 yards in UT’s 34-31 win on Oct. 11 at Neyland Stadium.

Arkansas was called for its first penalty on a hands to the face call with 5:57 to play in the third quarter. Tennessee declined the penalty after forcing a Taylen Green incompletion on fourth down in Vols territory.

Razorbacks center Corey Robinson II was called for holding with 15 seconds remaining in the third quarter, which was the first accepted penalty against Arkansas.

UT had been called for eight penalties for 65 yards at that point.

The Vols attempted to get Arkansas to jump offsides on a fourth-and-1 at the UT 35 in the third quarter. UT was called for a snap infraction on the play, which moved it back to a fourth-and-6 and Tennessee punted.

“I can’t speak to the explanation that I got,” Heupel said. “Our fans can watch it and judge for themselves what they thought.”

Tennessee also declined a fourth-quarter hold as defensive end Tyre West sacked Green for a 9-yard loss.
