Vote for Ames Tribune male Athlete of the Week for Oct. 5-11

The week of Oct. 5-11 was another busy one of Iowa high school football featuring teams from the Ames area.

The top game in the area saw Class 4A No. 7 Gilbert outlast Ballard in a 32-29 thriller at Huxley. Roland-Story moved one step closer to the 2A District 4 championship with a 36-7 road win over Hampton-Dumont-CAL, Nevada crushed Saydel by a 56-0 score and Collins-Maxwell scored a decisive 61-12 home win over North Tama.

Ames fell to 5A No. 5 Ankeny by a 55-3 score at home and Colo-NESCO suffered a close 44-40 loss to Baxter in Colo.

There were several standout individual performances from area football players during the week. There were some excellent individual races from area boys cross country runners as well.

Here are the Ames Tribune male Athlete of the Week nominees for the week of Oct. 5-11. AmesTrib.com readers vote to determine the winner, who will be announced at the end of the week.

Ethan Rash, Gilbert

Rash accounted for 155 yards and two touchdowns during the Class 4A No. 7 Gilbert football team’s 32-29 victory over Ballard on Oct. 10 at Huxley.

Rash ran the ball 15 times for 84 yards and two scores. The Tiger quarterback also completed 4 of 5 passes for 71 yards.

Cody Long, Roland-Story

Long had another big game running the football and on defense for the Roland-Story football team during its 36-7 victory over Hampton-Dumont-CAL on Oct. 10 in Hampton.

Long carried the ball 25 times for 160 yards and one touchdown, and he also caught four passes for 24 yards and a score. On defense, Long racked up five tackles and one sack.

Cooper Wierson, Collins-Maxwell

Wierson did a great job finding the end zone during the Collins-Maxwell’s 61-12 victory over North Tama on Oct. 10 at Maxwell.

Wierson ran for 157 yards and four touchdowns on just eight carries. The Spartan quarterback also completed his only pass attempt for 45 yards, and on defense he tallied three tackles and one interception.

Corben Lucchesi, Roland-Story

Lucchesi placed first individually in the varsity boys race during the South Hamilton Invitational on Oct. 9 in Jewell.

Lucchesi completed the 5-kilometer course in 17 minutes, 1.40 seconds. His time was just fast enough to beat the runner-up effort of 17:06.70 by Lynnville-Sully’s Colton Alberts.

Lucas Brown, Nevada

Brown was a ballhawk in the defensive back field for the Nevada football team during its 56-0 Class 3A District 5 victory over Saydel on Oct. 10 at Cub Stadium in Nevada.

Brown intercepted three passes for Nevada during the game. He totaled 106 return yards on those interceptions.
