Jaguars HC Liam Coen had a very specific job when he coached with the Rams

The Los Angeles Rams will face one of their former top assistants in London this weekend when they take on the Jacksonville Jaguars and their former offensive coordinator, Liam Coen.

Coen worked under Sean McVay on the Rams twice — first from 2018 to 2020 and then in 2022. Now, he’ll face his former mentor as the newest head coach for the Jaguars. Coen has credited McVay with helping him learn the nuances of coaching, but he explained ahead of Week 7 how one unique job played a pivotal role in his journey.

When he was an assistant receivers coach for the Rams from 2018 to 2019, Coen said he was responsible for literally drawing the team’s passing plays. This, Coen said, gave him unprecedented “access” to the mind of McVay.

“I did all the pass drawings for three years while I was an assistant position coach there,” Coen said. “That opportunity gave me an access to Sean that not maybe every single coach on the staff had, because when you’re responsible to draw the passes, you got to hear it from his mouth in terms of the details, the precision, the yardage, the depth, the ‘why.’ Like you’re getting an inside look at the ‘why’ behind every pass play. And I think that’s probably what maybe helped me the most of anything that I was able to do there, was the little finite details that go into just one play, one pass play.”

Coen left the Rams after the 2022 season to be the offensive coordinator at the University of Kentucky before he returned to the NFL as the offensive coordinator for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2024. Now, he leads a Jaguars offense that’s scored at least 25 points in four of six games and sit in second place in the AFC South at 4-2.

Week 7 will be Coen’s first crack at taking down his old boss (the Buccaneers didn’t play the Rams in 2024).

The same can be said for McVay against his old acolytes, although McVay has ample experience against former Rams assistants. McVay, though, hasn’t fared well against them: He’s 4-6 combined against Green Packers head coach Matt LaFleur (0-4 since 2019), Cincinnati Bengals head coach Zac Taylor (2-1 since 2019, including Super Bowl), Minnesota Vikings head coach Kevin O’Connell (2-0 since 2022) and Los Angeles Chargers head coach Brandon Staley (0-1).
