Will Chandler, Corner Canyon (year)
Right tackle Will Chandler has been one of the keys to Corner Canyon’s fantastic offensive season heading into the regular season finale this week.
Last week in particular, Corner Canyon coach Eric Kjar though Chandler played great in the 37-21 win over American Fork.
“Will works extremely hard and has improved so much in his technique and physically. Will played extremely well against American Fork and protected our quarterback and played well in our run game,” Kjar said.
With Chandler anchoring things in the trenches, Corner Canyon is averaging 304.6 passing yards and 194.6 rushing yards per game.

Avery Poulton, Woods Cross (Sr.)
With one week left in the regular season, Avery Poulton will look to help Woods Cross put the finishing touches on a perfect Region 5 season heading into the state tournament.
For the season, the dominant outside hitter is averaging hitting .428 with 4.3 kills per set and 299 kills on the season. She consistently hits with power and precision.
“Avery Poulton has been an exceptional leader and athlete for our high school volleyball team. As our senior captain and a dominant outside hitter, Avery has set the standard for excellence both on and off the court,” said Woods Cross coach Nicole Hogan.
Led by Poulton, Woods Cross owns a 24-1 overall record this season, with that one loss coming in five sets to 6A No. 1 Skyridge.
“Avery leads by example. Her work ethic, composure and determination inspire everyone around her. In every clutch moment, our team has been able to rely on her incredible talent and steady leadership to guide us forward. We have truly been fortunate to witness and be part of her outstanding play and leadership this season,” said Hogan.

Harlie Slaughter, West Field (So.)
West Field keeper Harlie Slaughter came up huge in the final two games of the regular season to help West Field earn a share of the Region 5 championship.
She was the catalyst in goal during 1-0 wins over both Clearfield and Box Elder, the two teams West Field shared the region title with.
“With Harlie in goal, we always have a chance. Although only a sophomore, she has poise and plays her best in big games and gives a calm confidence to our team,” said West Field coach Cade Miller.
“In both of our last two wins, she has come up with incredible stops that still has me scratching my head in disbelief at how she was able to get a hand and block those shots. I am grateful to have her on my team and not trying to score against her.”
West Field enjoyed a first-round bye in the first round of the 5A playoffs last week, and will host Brighton in the second round this week with an eye on a quarterfinal berth.
Boys Cross Country
Parker Lattin, Box Elder (Sr.)
Parker Lattin appears to be peaking at the right time.
The senior won the Region 5 championship at Weber County Fairgrounds last week, winning with a great time of 15:40.9 in what were difficult conditions according to coach Jeff Rawlins.
“His commitment to both running and mountain biking is evident in the speed and endurance he has developed over time. Despite facing injuries over the past two to three years, Parker’s determination has allowed him to achieve what he has done,” said Rawlins.
Earlier this season Lattin won a Pre-Region 5 meet, and then finished second at the Juab Invitational.
“He has learned how to not only train his body but take care of his body. On top of being a great runner, Parker is a great teammate to everyone. His positive attitude and dedication has helped improve his teammates over the course of the season.”
As a junior last season Lattin finished in 44th place at the state meet, a finish he’ll be looking to improve upon this year.
Girls Cross Country
Leah Larsen, Stansbury (Sr.)
Fresh off of winning the Region 11 title last week, Stansbury senior Leah Larsen turns her attention to the divisional and state meets over the next two weeks as she looks to wrap up her cross country career in style.
She won last week’s Region 11 championship at American West Heritage Center in Wellsville finishing with a time of 18:51.5, over 12 seconds faster than the runner up from Sky View.
“Leah is so consistent in her effort and drive to keep getting better. She leads our team by 100% example and effort. She does not shy away from doing hard things and in fact, looks forward to them. Leah is as tough as they come and genuinely cares about bettering herself and her team,” said Stansbury coach Steve Allen.
Last season at the 4A state meet, Larsen finished in ninth place with a time of 18:44.35. Five of the eight runner who finished ahead of her were seniors.
Girls Tennis
Scarlett Corey, Rowland Hall (Fr.)
Rowland Hall freshman Scarlett Corey showed great poise and resilience to capturing the 3A first singles state title last week.
After an undefeated record in region play during the regular season, she faltered in the region tournament losing in the final in two sets. That loss fueled her title run two weeks later.
“We had a couple of weeks before state and she concentrated heavily on what she needed to improve, mostly her second serve and forehand,” said Rowland Hall coach Rich Francey.
“She had a different attitude when state began and easily advanced to the semis where she took her game to a whole new level and won that match in straight sets. The final was as tough and after dropping the first set she came storming back to win in three sets.”
In that championship match she beat Morgan’s Macey Dee 3-6, 7-5, 6-2.
Boys Golf
Denver Douglas, Juab (Sr.)
Playing on his old home course at Stansbury Park Golf Course in the 3A state tournament last week, Denver Douglas was in his element in a dominant performance.
The senior shot a two-day 12-under, 132 to run away with 3A medalist honors by six strokes.
He shot a 69 on Day 1 and was tied for the lead, but followed it up with a scintillating 63 on Day 2 that included two eagles, five birdies and zero bogeys.
“After yesterday I knew I had to go low because we were tied, so I birded the first two and I just kind of fell at ease after that,” said Douglas. “I’ve struggled freshman, sophomore, junior year of playing golf, so it’s a good win finally.”
In his two prior years at Stansbury, he finished tied for ninth in the 4A state tournament as a junior and tied for 12th as a sophomore.
Baseball
Casey Walter, Panguitch (Jr.)
Casey Walter played a huge role in leading Panguitch to a repeat 1A state championship last week at Dixie High School.
Walter pitched six innings in Saturday’s elimination game against Piute, and then in the winner-take-all second game he had multiple hits and capped off Panguitch’s 6-run seventh with the game-winning RBI as the Bobcats repeated as state champs with the 10-9 win.
For the season, the pitcher/outfielder finished the season with a .407 batting average, with a .506 on-base percentage and 16 stolen bases.
Panguitch coach Rawley Burningham likes to think of this Derek Jeter quote when describing Walter: “There may be people that have more talent than you, but there is no excuse for anyone to work harder than you do.”
