The tiny African nation of Cape Verde have reached their first ever World Cup after qualifying for the tournament in North America next year.

A 3-0 win over Eswatini saw Cape Verde finish top in their group over Cameroon, who are second.

It is currently set to be the second smallest nation by population to play in a World Cup, after Iceland in 2018, with only around 525,000 living on the island.

“Giving this happiness to these people is enormous,” Cape Verde boss Pedri Brito said. “It’s a victory for all Cape Verdeans.

“It’s a special moment in this celebration of the 50th anniversary of our independence.”

They became the latest country to book their place at the World Cup over this international break, with several others also able to guarantee their spot before club football returns, including England.
