6 plays that stood out from Bears' Week 6 win vs. Commanders

For a variety of reasons, the Chicago Bears needed to defeat the Washington Commanders on Monday Night Football. They had to address certain demons from a year ago, as well as keep their win streak alive to stay in the playoff race.

They did just that, but it wasn’t easy. Everyone on the team needed to contribute something for them to squeak out a 25-24 win. Although there are areas for improvement, as evident by this game and their win over the Las Vegas Raiders, they are heading in the right direction. As many people have pointed out, they would have likely lost this game last season by multiple scores.

A lot of plays have to go right to win a football game, but these five are the most consequential to the victory in Washington on Monday Night Football:

1. Jaquan Brisker INT

The Bears were in danger of letting the Commanders take a 7-3 lead in the first quarter. Right when they were about to do so, Jaquan Brisker intercepted Jayden Daniels’ pass and ran it back for decent field position. If that ball slips through, it may have been caught in the end zone. Even if it weren’t caught, the Bears may have allowed a touchdown on the next play or the one after. At a minimum, the game could have been tied then on a Washington field goal. Good teams win because their best players make plays. Chicago’s secondary, although it came into the season looking suspect, has been creating turnovers a lot this season. Brisker’s is the next one in a long line of them.

2. Caleb Williams scores on his own

The Bears need Caleb Williams to make plays, and he did that on Monday. On this one in particular, he scored Chicago’s first touchdown of the game when they already had a 6-0 lead. Sometimes, it is just better to do things yourself. That was the case for Williams on this play. He was good enough to get them close, and he rewarded the offense and the whole team for their efforts with a big play using his feet.

3. Caleb Williams’ deep throw to Luther Burden III

Not every big play is going to result in points, but you need explosive plays to lead you to points at times. That is the truth here with this Caleb Williams’ pass to Luther Burden III. So far this season, Burden has been an incredible deep threat, and Williams has found some chemistry with him. It was always important to have depth behind DJ Moore and Rome Odunze, and Burden is the leader of that depth.

4. D’Andre Swift’s 55-yard TD reception

The Bears haven’t gotten the return on investment that they were hoping for when they signed D’Andre Swift, but he had his best game in a Chicago uniform by far on Monday night. He ran the ball 14 times for 108 yards, which set up the passing game nice. Swift also had this 55-yard touchdown reception, where he got most of his yards after the catch. He was able to find a hole, miss a tackle and take it to the house. This play was a huge factor in what came next for the Bears as they looked to mount a comeback.

5. Nahshon Wright’d fumble recovery

The Bears were in danger of blowing this game by a slim margin. The Commanders were trying to put it away with just over three minutes left in regulation when the Bears pounced on an opportunity. During the process of handing the ball to the running back, Jayden Daniels fumbled the football. Nahshon Wright was there to recover the ball at about midfield. Down two points, the Bears only needed a handful of yards to set up their kicker for a game-winning field goal attempt.

6. Jake Moody sends Chicago home with a game winning field goal

The Bears needed a kicker going into this game with Cairo Santos nursing a thigh injury. They signed Jake Moody to the practice squad after the San Francisco 49ers cut him a few weeks ago. Moody was good enough to be drafted, which is rare for kickers, but his confidence and production fell off in San Francisco. On game day, the Bears elevated him from the practice squad in place of Santos, and he hit four out of five field goals. One of those was this game-winner that gave the Bears a 25-24 victory at the scene of last year’s crime. Moody came in, did his job well, and was a huge reason that the Bears won with his 13 total points. This game winner could spark something special, but they must keep working.
