The Brooklyn Nets have one game left on their preseason schedule before the 2025-26 NBA regular season begins and the games begin to count towards their record. Brooklyn has already been making some moves in anticipation of being roster compliant by the season opener, but it seems like they’re still trying to tinker with other matters.
The Nets announced on Tuesday that they had signed guard Malachi Smith to the roster as the franchise looks to finalize the roster ahead of regular-season competition. As a corresponding move, Brooklyn waived guard Terry Roberts and forward Tre Scott as the Nets will eventually have to get to 18 players on the roster before the season opens.
Roberts and Scott were two players that the Nets signed on Monday after waiving guard Dariq Whitehead and forward Drew Timme in two surprising moves. At this point in the preseason, Brooklyn still has to worry about getting to the salary floor by the time the regular season tips off so it’s possible that signing Smith will be along the same vein as Roberts and Scott.
Smith, 25, spent the 2024-25 season playing for the Memphis Hustle, the G League affiliate of the NBA’s Memphis Grizzlies, as he continues to work for his opportunity to play at the next level. In 46 G League games, Smith averaged 11.4 points, 4.2 rebounds, and 3.0 assists per game while shooting 53.4% from the field and 33.8% from three-point range.
Whether Smith remains on Brooklyn’s roster remains to be seen as general manager Sean Marks and the front office will have to decide Smith’s value to the roster at this point. Either way, Brooklyn is trying to take care of multiple matters as it prepares for a 2025-26 that fans and the franchise can hopefully be proud of.
