Hall of Fame Boston Celtics forward Larry Bird might have been the first player in his team’s history to score 60 points in a game (and only the second, after Jayson Tatum joined him in that rarified air), but if you ask the Hick From French Lick about the otherworldly scoring performance put on by Bird on March 12, 1985, vs. the Atlanta Hawks, it was not even his favorite game…that season.

Larry Legend had plenty to say about that storied contest over the years, but in his inimitable way, he downplayed perhaps the greatest day of his career by pointing to all the things he did better in another contest. “People get caught up in points, but I can’t say it’s in the top 20 of my favorite games,” explained the Celtics legend via Boston Dot Com’s Chad Finn.

“I had games where I scored just 15 or 16 points, but I played excellent basketball in my mind, I did a little bit of everything,” he added. “I didn’t rebound or pass much.”

“Sixty-points is a lot. Don’t get me wrong. I made shots against the Hawks that game I can’t recall making in any other time,” Bird continued. “It’s not easy to do.”

“But there was a game from a little earlier that season where I had a triple-double and a bunch of steals in around 30 minutes against the Jazz. That had it all. That was what I’d call a great game, if you want to talk about that one.”
