There’s positive news for Drew Allar this week. Penn State’s senior quarterback underwent surgery on his broken left ankle, according to ESPN’s Pete Thamel, who said Allar will be able to return to workouts in the upcoming months.
Allar went down late in the fourth quarter against Northwestern last Sunday and was carted off from the sideline. James Franklin said after the game that Allar would be out for the season, and redshirt freshman Ethan Grunkemeyer will now take over as the team’s starter going into the final six games of the season.
Allar is in his last year of eligibility, meaning his collegiate career has come to a close. He’s fourth on Penn State’s career leaderboards in career passing yards (7,402) and third in career passing touchdowns (61). He’s also the most efficient starting quarterback in school history with just a .013 interception ratio.
Allar will turn his attention toward supporting his teammates while preparing for the 2026 NFL Draft. The 6-foot-5 quarterback was previously touted as a potential first-round pick, though his draft stock has fallen toward the mid- to late rounds since the start of the season.
