F1 broadcasts going from ESPN to Apple TV: What we know

If you’ve enjoyed F1 broadcasts on ESPN in the United States, there’s some surprising news on Friday: Beginning in 2026, Apple TV will be broadcasting Formula 1 instead.

It’s a five-year deal for F1 and Apple, which also brought F1 The Movie to theaters (and you can stream that in December, but that’s for another post). It’s the latest big move for the sport that has gotten MUCH more popular stateside after Drive to Survive got popular on Netflix.

How much did Apple pay for F1 broadcasting rights?

Per Variety:

Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed. Apple will pay an average of approximately $150 million annually to Formula 1 under the pact, valuing it at about $750 million over the term, according to a source with direct knowledge of the agreement.

How much does Apple TV cost?

It’s $12.99 per month.

What will Apple TV do that’s special with F1 broadcasts?

That Variety report says some races and practices will be available for free, and “Apple said it will “amplify” the sport across Apple News, Apple Maps, Apple Music and Apple Fitness+, and will promote Formula 1 in its physical Apple Stores. The free Apple Sports app for iPhone will feature live updates for every qualifying, Sprint and race for each Grand Prix across the season, with real-time leaderboards, season driver and constructor standings.”

What did ESPN say about the F1 Apple TV deal?

Per a statement:

“We’re incredibly proud of what we and Formula 1 accomplished together in the United States and look forward to a strong finish in this final season. We wish F1 well in the future.”
