New York Giants offensive coordinator Mike Kafka isn’t mincing words ahead of Sunday’s road clash at Empower Field at Mile High against the Denver Broncos: The Broncos’ defense is a nightmare waiting to unfold.
“This is a great group,” Kafka said Thursday, tipping his cap to defensive coordinator Vance Joseph. “He does a really good job, very well coached, schematically to throw a lot at you — zone coverages, man coverages, different variations of fronts.”
With the Broncos’ unit leading the NFL with 30 sacks through six games — on pace to shatter the single-season record — Kafka’s respect is well-earned. Joseph’s scheme emphasizes simulated pressures, blitzing roughly 30 percent of snaps while ramping up man coverage to around 65 percent, forcing quarterbacks into one-on-one nightmares without overcommitting.
At the forefront? Outside linebacker Nik Bonitto, the league’s sack leader with 8.0, who is on a pace projecting to a franchise record 23.0.
“He’s a phenomenal pass rusher,” Kafka noted, highlighting Bonitto’s edge in protecting rookie quarterback Jaxson Dart.
The Giants must be “fundamentally sound” across all levels, from third-down stops to red-zone walls, or risk getting swallowed by Denver’s swarm.
Kafka’s blueprint? Total preparation.
“We’ve really got to be dialed into the program this week, understanding… their certain techniques,” he said.
For a Giants offense leaning on the run, this “great challenge” could define their midseason surge — or expose cracks against a defense redefining dominance.
