New Orleans Pelicans coach Willie Green said the team will continue to monitor Derik Queen after the rookie was cleared to resume full basketball activities.
Queen was limited on the court to begin training camp after undergoing surgery on July 18 to address a torn ligament in his left wrist. He was only permitted by the team to take part in the non-contact portions of practice in the preseason.
The 13th pick traveled with the Pelicans throughout the preseason and participated in full-court sprints during pregame warm-ups. He went through his first full practice with the team on Saturday and could be available to play in their season opener on Wednesday.
“He is ramping up,” Green said. “We have got a few days for him to ramp up. The medical team will continue to evaluate how he feels after each day, and then we’ll have updates accordingly.”
Queen logged three appearances with the Pelicans in summer league, averaging 14 points, 11 rebounds, 2.3 assists and one block. He registered a double-double in each appearance, including a 17-point, 10-rebound effort against Portland on July 15.
The 20-year-old thought his first practice went well with the team, though he admitted there were understandably some mistakes made on the court. He believes he should be completely up to speed after 2-3 more days of practice and other team drills.
Queen has been eager to practice without restrictions and was finally able to hit the court in an official capacity on Saturday. After being limited, Queen believes it still hasn’t hit him yet that he is in the NBA, though that feeling could soon come.
“Whenever the first game is, probably,” Queen said. “I’ve been around these guys for a little over a month, so I’m just competing out there and stuff. It hasn’t hit me yet.”
