Georgia transfer Carson Beck throws another game-losing INT

Georgia transfer quarterback Carson Beck and the Miami Hurricanes needed to recover from a brutal 24-21 loss vs. the Louisville Cardinals. Demolishing the Stanford Cardinal 42-7 a week ago was a start, but against the SMU Mustangs, the stakes were higher.

The SMU game marked the first time the Hurricanes have played outside of Florida the entire year, and with one conference loss already, the Hurricanes couldn’t afford another. However, Miami lost another close game, with SMU defeating them in overtime 26-20.

Carson Beck was mediocre. He completed 26 of his 38 passes for 274 yards and two touchdowns, but he also threw two interceptions, including a game-losing interception. The first interception came when Miami was up 7-0 in the second quarter, and the Mustangs capitalized on it, with a 28-yard touchdown on the very next play.

Carson Beck did well enough to keep Miami in the game, with the Hurricanes boasting a 20-17 lead in the fourth quarter. However, Beck couldn’t move the chains on a third-and-8 with 2:23 left, forcing Miami to punt. SMU drove down to the Miami 21 to convert the game-tying field goal and send it to overtime.

That’s when Carson Beck’s second interception occurred. At SMU’s 7-yard line, with the Hurricanes looking for a touchdown in overtime, Beck tried throwing over the middle to Ahmaad Moses, but his throw was cut off by SMU DB Romello Brinson. The Mustangs scored on their possession, leaving Miami with an ugly 26-20 loss.

After the game, Beck did not take blame for the final interception. He was frustrated the SMU defense kept running the same play and Miami could not find a way to crack the code in overtime.

“They (the SMU defense) ran the same thing the whole time,” Beck said. “I just execute the play that is called. If I’m given the opportunity to, if I see something, change something, then I will. But, again, I just execute the play that’s called.”

Beck’s costly interception could have been avoided. If he threw the ball away, then the Hurricanes would’ve been in field goal range.

Regardless, Miami’s chances of making the College Football Playoff are now slim. They’ll play Syracuse on Nov. 8, with Beck going against former Georgia assistant Fran Brown.

Georgia fans are thanking the Georgia coaching staff for going with Gunner Stockton instead of keeping Carson Beck around. Stockton has just two interceptions on the entire season compared to Beck’s nine. He also has five more total touchdowns than Beck.
