LSU athletics have been a media spectacle over the past week. From Brian Kelly’s firing, to Joe Sloan’s, to Scott Woodward’s, and Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry’s heavy involvement in each of those dismissals, there has been a lot to discuss with the Tigers. The one central theme, however, is what they will do next.
Even after Landry voiced his frustration with the realities of college football head coaching contracts, LSU still ranks as one of the top open jobs in college football. A recent article from The Athletic confirms this, placing LSU at the top among the jobs that have opened up this fall.
There are several reasons for this, but most importantly, the Tigers provide any head coach with one of the best chances to win a national championship. LSU’s athletics program, valued at $1.23 billion, ranks as the 10th-highest in college football, according to The Athletic. This means the Tigers will always hold a strong recruiting advantage, especially in the NIL era.
Secondly, LSU’s culture and tradition consistently attract the best players in Louisiana. LSU has had a top 10 recruiting class in three of the four years of the Brian Kelly era, and recent reports suggest he wasn’t fully maximizing recruiting efforts. A coach who has a sharper focus in that area would likely be even more successful.
Ultimately, LSU should rank at the top of this list and comfortably be in the top five nationwide, not just in the open positions. The job can be a gamble for a coach due to the high level of success required, but it offers top-tier pay, significant recruiting potential, and ultimately, a steady opportunity to win a national championship. Few coaches across the country wouldn’t at least take a call when LSU comes knocking in the coming weeks.
