WEST LAFAYETTE — Purdue men’s basketball does not expect an extended absence for Trey Kaufman-Renn, but they might be without the All-Big Ten forward for a little while longer.
Boilermakers coach Matt Painter said Kaufman-Renn could miss Friday’s game against Oakland. The senior had played 110 consecutive games over the previous four years before missing Tuesday’s season-opening win over Evansville with a hip injury.
“We’ll get some tests done tomorrow and see where he is,” Painter said. “He might miss Friday, but I don’t expect him to be out a long time, if at all. He could come in tomorrow and practice. He could come in tomorrow and say he can’t practice. It’s kind of a different injury.”
Painter said he did not know Kaufman-Renn might be unavailable until Tuesday morning’s walk-through. He said the forward practiced Monday and suffered something akin to a hip pointer near the end.
Jack Benter took over first-team reps in walk through, and the redshirt freshman’s collegiate debut became his first career start. He collected 11 points, six rebounds and two assists in Kaufman-Renn’s absence.
