Oregon head coach Dan Lanning praises Iowa football 'Hawkeye Wave' tradition

As No. 20 Iowa (6-2, 4-1 Big Ten) prepares to host No. 9 Oregon (7-1, 4-1 Big Ten) from Kinnick Stadium on Saturday, Ducks head coach Dan Lanning praised the “Hawkeye Wave” tradition.

While there are many traditions that make college football such a unifying sport to be a part of, the Hawkeyes’ tradition at the end of the first quarter involving a stadium-wide wave to the hundreds of children overlooking from the University of Iowa Health Care Stead Family Children’s Hospital is arguably the nation’s finest.

Lanning shared his appreciation for the tradition, calling it one of college football’s greatest.

“It’s gotta be one of the greatest traditions in college football…a few yards away from you…fighting a battle that matters a lot more than the game,” Lanning said.

As for the on-field battle, the game is significant to both programs. For Oregon, a win will keep the Ducks within striking distance of both No. 2 Indiana (9-0, 6-0 Big Ten) and No. 1 Ohio State (8-0, 5-0 Big Ten) for a trip to the Big Ten Championship game in Indianapolis.

Meanwhile, a victory by Iowa would not only be a statement win for the Hawkeyes, but it would also further solidify the program as a legitimate contender within the conference and it would be a large step toward Iowa’s potential first-ever College Football Playoff appearance.

The sold-out clash between Iowa and Oregon is set to begin at 2:30 p.m. CT from Kinnick Stadium in Iowa City, Iowa, and will be broadcast on CBS, with play-by-play voice Brad Nessler, analyst Gary Danielson, and sideline reporter Jenny Dell on the call.
