Colts CB Sauce Gardner clears concussion protocol, ready for Falcons game in Berlin

INDIANAPOLIS  – Sauce Gardner‘s first in-game action in a Colts uniform will be a long ways from the two-time First Team All-Pro cornerback’s new home.

Gardner, the newest Colt after Indianapolis general manager Chris Ballard made a blockbuster trade Tuesday with the New York Jets is in line to play Sunday in the team’s international contest in Berlin against the Atlanta Falcons after clearing concussion protocol. The 25-year-old left the field late in New York’s Week 7 loss to the Carolina Panthers and missed the following week’s game against the Cincinnati Bengals, where the Jets (1-7) logged their first win of the season.

A bye week followed, two days after which Gardner was traded. The Detroit native was a full participant in Wednesday’s practice, and Thursday morning, Colts officials confirmed Gardner had cleared the NFL’s five-step concussion protocol, clearning him to speak with the media for the first time since he was traded.

Gardner told reporters he’s barely slept in the last 48 hours during the whirlwind life transition, but he’s been deep in preparation-mode in an effort to try and learn Colts defensive coordinator Lou Anarumo’s schemes and system ahead of likely being assigned to cover Falcons top wideout Drake London Sunday in Berlin.

“Go out there and ball, just play like I’ve been here already. That’s the main thing,” Gardner said Wednesday when asked of his own expectations for Sunday’s matchup. “I don’t want to be somebody that you’ve got to overcommunicate to, like you think I don’t know what we’re playing.

“It’s my job to get everything and understand everything we’re about to play on Sunday in the short time I have.”
