Nets legend Jason Kidd passed by Kings' Russell Westbrook for NBA rebounds by a guard

The Brooklyn Nets are currently enjoying the fruits of their labor after notching their first win of the 2025-26 NBA season following Wednesday’s 112-103 at the Indiana Pacers. Nets legend Jason Kidd previously held the NBA record for the most total rebounds by a guard (8,725) in the league’s history, but he has now been passed by future Hall-of-Famer Russell Westbrook.

Westbrook, who has collected 8,734 rebounds over the course of his storied career as of this writing, needed just seven rebounds heading into Wednesday’s game against the Golden State Warriors to tie Kidd and eight to pass the former Nets great. On the way to helping the Sacramento Kings beat the Warriors 121-116 on Wednesday, Westbrook put up a triple-double of 23 points, 16 rebounds, and 10 assists.

Kidd, who spent seven seasons as a member of the then-New Jersey Nets, totaled 3,662 rebounds during his time in New Jersey, already making him one of the best rebounding guards of his generation. With career averages of 12.6 points, 6.3 rebounds, 8.7 assists, and 1.9 steals per game, Kidd is usually more known for his passing than his rebounding, but Westbrook believes he is definitively a better rebounding guard than Kidd.

“Humbly speaking, I’m the best rebounding guard ever. So if the ball come across the rim, I’m going to get it,” Westbrook said during his postgame press conference, per ESPN’s Anthony Slater. More to the point, Westbrook is the better rebounder of the two as he now has a career average of 7.0 rebounds per game while Kidd ended his career averaging 6.3 rebounds per contest.

Interestingly enough, neither Kidd nor Westbrook is close to being the best rebounding guard in NBA history when it comes to per game numbers, according to Statmuse. In terms of players that have played at least 400 games as a guard, Los Angeles Lakers guard Luka Doncic is the best rebounding guard (8.7 rebounds per game), but Kidd and Westbrook are certainly in the conversation.
