Matthew Stafford considers one Rams lineman 'another coach out on the field'

Matthew Stafford had nothing but praise for his center, Coleman Shelton, after another strong showing from him, especially in the run game. Shelton has become one of the quiet leaders in the locker room, earning his quarterback’s trust through consistency, communication, and composure as the Los Angeles Rams sit 6-2 through eight games. When asked about Shelton’s impact, Stafford didn’t hesitate to highlight just how valuable he’s been to the Rams’ offensive success this season.

“He’s another coach out on the field,” Stafford said. “He’s outstanding in his ability to communicate, make adjustments on the fly, and then he is playing at a high level too. When you combine those things, I feel like on the offensive line, when you can go inside-out with great communication and everybody is on the same page, that’s when you have your best chance to go out there and play well.”

That communication has been one of the defining traits of this Rams offense. Shelton’s ability to recognize defensive fronts, identify blitzes, and get the line set has allowed Stafford to operate in the pocket and throw to all levels of the field with time. Stafford noted that the group’s understanding of both the playbook and their opponents has been a major step forward.

“I think those guys have a great understanding of what we’re trying to accomplish on every single play,” Stafford added. “They’ve got a great grasp of the looks we expect to get, and if something new shows up, they adjust and make it right.”

Shelton’s leadership and execution have anchored a line that continues to grow stronger each week. The chemistry between him and Stafford has been evident, especially in high-pressure moments where clear communication can make all the difference. After leaving the Rams for the Bears last season, Shelton has shown the kind of stability that keeps an offense humming — and the Rams know they’ve got one of the best communicators in the league at the center of it all.

With the Rams traveling to Levi’s Stadium to take on the 49ers this Sunday, it is important that the offense continues its rhythm as the backend of the season approaches.
