5 things we learned about the Hoosiers in win over Marquette: Tucker DeVries, Lamar Wilkerson star

Indiana men’s basketball got a huge win on Sunday afternoon, beating Marquette 100-77 at the United Center in Chicago, Illinois.

It’s the second victory of the season for the Hoosiers and Darian DeVries’ first win over a high-major opponent as Indiana’s coach. There was some concern that Indiana may not have built enough chemistry early enough in the season when this game was listed second in the schedule, but the Hoosiers clearly had more than enough to put the Golden Eagles away.

Here’s five things we learned:

  • Tucker DeVries looked excellent, particularly in the first half. He led all scorers by over 10 points through the first 20 minutes of action, with 24 while going 5-7 from distance. He finished with 27 points after a quiet second half but it was clearly enough. When he got into foul trouble, Lamar Wilkerson stepped up to keep the offense humming. If Indiana can get performances like that out of those two, it’ll be difficult to guard all season.
  • The fight was there despite Indiana facing foul trouble from the moment the game tipped off. The Hoosiers are facing some real depth problems with its bench options to handle the ball are largely injured. When fouls started piling up, Indiana turned to guys like Trent Sisley, Jasai Miles and Sam Alexis to hold on defense and extend the lead offensively. Each did a tremendous job in that role. When Marquette looked ready to mount a run, Indiana always had a response.
  • 3-point shooting is officially back in Bloomington. The Hoosiers went an unreal 14-28 from long range in the the best 3-point performance the program has seen in the better part of the last decade. DeVries obviously had his performance, but Wilkerson went 6-10 with a few really long shots to extend the lead when Marquette was looking to turn this back into a game.
  • Indiana’s backcourt looked excellent overall. Tayton Conerway wasn’t able to hit a shot from the field, but got to the free throw line to get some points on the board while dishing out eight assists to just a single turnover. Not to be outdone, Wilkerson added eight of his own while Conor Enright’s passing led to five buckets. That’s 21(!) assists from the Hoosier guards.
  • Defense was key in this one. Yes Indiana scored a ton of points, but the Hoosiers kept the Eagles from getting at all comfortable offensively. It felt like Marquette was trying to find a few different ways to get a look and none of them worked aside from a few lapses in the Indiana defense. The Hoosiers put heat on the ball and stayed stout for the most part across the court.

Indiana will return to action on Wednesday against Milwaukee at Assembly Hall in Bloomington, Indiana.
