New Chargers OL not starting vs. Steelers in Week 10 after last minute trade at deadline

The Los Angeles Chargers made a huge, last-minute splash on the offensive line ahead of the NFL trade deadline earlier in the week — but their new offensive lineman, Trevor Penning, isn’t starting against the Pittsburgh Steelers on Sunday Night Football.

Speaking with reporters on Friday, Chargers HC Jim Harbaugh made it clear that while Penning had a “really good week” in practice, Austin Deculus will start at left tackle and Trey Pipkins will start at right tackle against the Steelers in Week 10 — mirroring what The Athletic’s Daniel Popper also saw in practice.

Minutes before the NFL trade deadline cutoff on November 4 at 4:00 p.m. EST, the Chargers acquired Penning from the New Orleans Saints in exchange for a 2027 sixth-round pick — filling the massive hole left by OT Joe Alt’s season-ending ankle injury.

While Penning will likely play a large role for the Chargers as the latter half of the season gets underway, it appears Harbaugh isn’t looking to test his new offensive lineman against the fierce Steelers pass rush in Week 10.
