Former Ravens' CB Jaire Alexander is stepping away from NFL as he contemplates retirement

All great athletes reach a point of reflection and deep thought on their playing career. Jaire Alexander has reached that plateau in his life. The Eagles acquired the veteran cornerback from the Baltimore Ravens to add more depth in the secondary. The Eagles received the veteran cornerback and a 2027 seventh-round pick in exchange for a 2026 sixth-round pick.

Asked about the move in his post-NFL trade deadline press conference, Eagles‘ GM Howie Roseman initially admitted that he had done research, spoken to Baltimore’s front office, and decided the deal was worth the risk.

It was a risky move, but the former Packers cornerback was supposed to feel comfortable, since it’s a homecoming for Alexander, who was born in Philadelphia before moving to the Charlotte area as a toddler. Alexander attended Rocky River High School in Mint Hill, North Carolina, but talked about his family that remains in Philadelphia following his first Eagles practice.

Before departing for Green Bay, the Eagles ruled Alexander out, allowing him to stay back and rehab his injured knee. Now, the former All-Pro cornerback is stepping away from the game as he contemplates retirement.

Alexander has 290 career tackles, 12 for loss, 12 interceptions, 1.5 sacks, 70 passes defensed, three forced fumbles, two fumble recoveries, and a touchdown in the regular season.

Alexander signed a one-year deal with the Ravens after the Packers released him in June. Alexander played in two games this season in Baltimore, registering five tackles. However, in the remaining six games, he was either injured or a healthy scratch. He’ll have a familiar face in Philadelphia.

Alexander spent the 2019 and 2020 seasons with Eagles‘ second-year defensive backs coach Christian Parker, and the two immediately began integrating the talented cornerback into Vic Fangio’s scheme. Now, he’ll take time to rehab and decide his future.
