The Heisman race appears to be down to two players with two others on the periphery.
Can anyone else work their way into the picture?
Ohio State QB Julian Sayin is now the slight favorite for the award at BetMGM. His odds are +160 and just ahead of Indiana QB Fernando Mendoza at +175. Alabama QB Ty Simpson is the No. 3 favorite at +550 ahead of Texas A&M QB Marcel Reed at +750.
After that, no one else is close.
If all four of those are near locks to be Heisman finalists, will just four (or fewer) players travel to New York as Heisman finalists or could a fifth join the party? Here are the three long shots we think could work their way into a trip to the ceremony in December.
Ohio State WR Jeremiah Smith (+2500)
-
65 catches, 862 yards, 10 TDs; 2 carries, 20 yards, 1 TD
Smith’s candidacy has been overshadowed by just how good Sayin has been in 2025. He’s the undisputed best wide receiver in college football as he and Carnell Tate have been nearly unstoppable. While defenses have flocked to Smith, Tate is averaging 18 yards a catch and has seven touchdowns himself.
Smith is also starting to put up big numbers at the right time. He had six catches for 123 yards and two touchdowns against Penn State and had 10 grabs for 137 yards and a score against Purdue in Week 11. He’s capable of taking over nearly any game, and if he does that against Michigan and in the Big Ten title game, he’ll definitely get some votes.
It’s also not unheard of for a QB and a WR from the same team to both be Heisman finalists. When Alabama’s DeVonta Smith won the Heisman in 2020, QB Mac Jones finished third in the voting. Both Baker Mayfield and Dede Westbrook were Heisman finalists in 2016 as well.
Georgia QB Gunner Stockton (+3000)
-
179-of-258 passing, 2,040 yards, 15 TDs, 2 interceptions; 77 carries, 321 yards, 7 TDs
Stockton has played extremely well over his past three games. Since Georgia’s slugfest win over Auburn, he’s accounted for 10 total touchdowns and thrown just one interception in wins over Ole Miss, Florida and Mississippi State. Georgia’s offense has averaged over six yards a play four times this season. And two of those games have happened in that three-game stretch.
Stockton will also have a prime opportunity to improve his Heisman odds on Saturday night against Texas. The Bulldogs could play in three big games over the next four weeks with the regular-season finale against Georgia Tech on Black Friday and a potential SEC title game appearance. It was nearly a year ago in Atlanta when Stockton took over as Georgia’s starter following Carson Beck’s elbow injury.
Notre Dame RB Jeremiyah Love (+4000)
-
154 carries, 988 yards, 13 TDs; 24 catches, 254 yards, 3 TDs
After a slow start to the season at Miami, Love has been extremely consistent. He’s now scored a touchdown in each of Notre Dame’s last eight games and has scored at least two TDs in five of those games. After rushing 24 times for 228 yards and a TD against USC, he had 17 carries for 136 yards and two scores against Boston College while rushing for 94 yards and two scores on just 13 carries against Navy.
Love’s problem, however, is that while the top four in the Heisman race and the two players above him could all play four more games this season, he’s capped at three. A big performance against Pitt on Saturday will certainly help Love’s Heisman case, but he may need to run for over 200 yards in multiple games the rest of the season to get more than some third-place votes.
