I made many predictions for the Chicago Bears and Caleb Williams prior to their matchup against the Giants. Making predictions about this current Bears team is like picking numbers for the lottery. Each week, this team looks different than the last, and there is a different player who steps up. The one thing, however, that has been consistent is the Bears winning the game in the end.
Here is how my five expectations for the Bears played out in their victory versus the Giants on Sunday:
Caleb Williams and DJ Moore will connect for an opening touchdown
“Caleb Williams and DJ Moore’s connection has been growing as of late. Ben Johnson has put more emphasis on getting the ball to DJ Moore in any way possible. I expect the Bears to come out of the gates hot, and Caleb puts together a great first drive, resulting in a touchdown pass to DJ Moore.”
It took the Bears some time to score a touchdown. It came in the first quarter, but it took some struggles in the Bears’ first drive. Caleb and the Bears did not convert on 4th down in the opening drive, turning the ball over on downs in Giants territory. Kyle Monangai was the Bears player who got in the end zone first. Not only did they not connect for an opening touchdown, but they also did not connect for a single pass.
Rome Odunze leads the Bears in receiving yards
“Rome Odunze has been in the news for not only his recent poor play but also his dad’s thoughts on his team this season. Amidst the distractions, Rome has handled himself well, and I believe his slump ends this week. Caleb will find Rome early and often. Ben Johnson will look to get Rome’s confidence up with easy targets as well. Rome was playing like one of the best receivers in the NFL to start the season, and he can get back to that with a dominant performance this week. The Giants do not have the corners to take Rome out of the game. Rome should be in for a very productive day, a stat line that includes 100+ yards receiving, and a pair of touchdowns seems really realistic for Rome to silence the noise about him on the field and off the field.”
Rome Odunze led the Bears in receiving with a nice bounce-back game, and he caught a touchdown that helped the Bears get this game closer in the 4th. Caleb looked confident throwing to Rome again, and Rome showed up for him more often than not.
Colston Loveland will have another big game
“Last week’s NFC Offensive Player of the Week, Colston Loveland, could end up going back-to-back. Cole Kmet is dealing with a concussion, and he may miss this game versus the Giants. Opening the door for a full workload for Loveland. Loveland looks hungry, and with his great ability to get yards after the catch, he will become a favorite target for Caleb if he is not already. The Giants have been a team over the past years that has consistently given up a lot of yards to tight ends. The Giants do not have the personnel to be able to hold a player in check like Loveland. If Caleb gets time can get the ball out quickly. Loveland can make the Giants pay all game long. I expect Colston Loveland to hit the 100-yard mark for a consecutive game.”
Colston Loveland did not have nearly the same game as last week, but he is trending in the right direction to become a top target for the Chicago Bears moving forward. The more he gets involved, the more dangerous this offense becomes. Loveland finished the game with 4 catches for 55 yards.
Kyle Monangai leads the Bears’ run game to another dominant showing
“The Giants over the last two games have allowed 3 different running backs to run for 100 yards against them. The Bears’ run game has been dominant, and whether or not D’Andre Swift plays, Kyle Monangai will get the bulk of the carries. He will make this defense pay with his tough running ability and his physicality. I don’t think he will run for 175 yards again, but I would expect him to get at least 100 yards on the ground.”
Kyle Monangai was able to get a rushing touchdown, but other than that, he did not make an impact. He had 7 carries for 28 yards. D’Andre Swift took back control of this running back room as he had 13 carries for 80 yards rushing.
Tyrique Stevenson bounces back, gets two picks
“Tyrique Stevenson and this Bears secondary are coming off a disastrous performance against the Bengals. This week will be a good matchup to have a bounce-back game against. The Giants have a lack of weapons, and Jaxson Dart is not the same passer as Joe Flacco. The Giants are an offense that, even though the Bears’ defense is as bad as they are, can still scheme up a great game plan and dominate. One of the headliners for this defense playing better will be Stevenson, as I believe he will secure two interceptions in this game against the rookie. I expect Dennis Allen to look to confuse Dart and have effective blitz designs to cause Dart to force things. Stevenson has been a ball magnet at times; he will be waiting to capitalize on a Dart mistake.”
Tyrique Stevenson did not step up and have the game I expected him to have. The star in the Bears’ secondary Sunday was instead C.J. Gardner-Johnson. Hopefully, Tyrique can bounce back sooner rather than later, especially with the Bears still without Kyler Gordon and Jaylon Johnson.
