Chicago Bears quarterback Caleb Williams has made strides in his second season of the NFL under first-year head coach Ben Johnson, and analysts around the league are starting to take notice.
While Williams put up a respectable rookie season, the Bears failed as a team and finished the year 5-12, leading the front office to upgrade the roster and the coaching staff in an effort to elevate their young quarterback. In his first nine games under Johnson, Williams has thrown for 2,136 yards, 12 touchdowns, and four interceptions while the team has a 6-3 record, already surpassing their total from last year.
With all credit to his development and growth with Johnson, Williams is currently on pace to become the first 4,000-yard passer in franchise history, and former NFL head coach Rex Ryan believes he’s a generational talent at the quarterback position.
Speaking on ESPN’s “Get Up,” Ryan had plenty of praise for Williams and the steps he’s taken to advance his career in his second season.
“He’s a generational talent, I think people forget that,” Ryan said. “He’s a generational talent and now you pair him with a heck of a football coach. He’s going to keep climbing, guys. When it’s all said and done, is this a playoff team? It kind of looks that way.”
Chicago has not made the playoffs since 2018, the last time they won the NFC North division, which was ironically the first year of head coach Matt Nagy, who also won the Coach of the Year that season. Johnson has not only turned around the success of the team, but has taken the play of the former No. 1 overall pick to the next level, and now many believe Williams could be the answer to take the Bears to much more team success.
