Michigan basketball will get its first road test tonight in Fort Worth, Texas, as the Wolverines take on the TCU Horned Frogs.
The Wolverines have surged to No. 5 in the coaches’ poll after a pair of wins in the state of Michigan — a thumping of Oakland in Ann Arbor and an overtime nailbiter over Wake Forest in Detroit — their best ranking under second-year coach Dusty May.
TONY GARCIA’S PICK: Prediction, three factors for Michigan basketball’s first true road game vs. TCU
May brought in a wealth of talent via transfer, with former Illinois guard Morez Johnson Jr. leading the way with 17 points and 5.5 rebounds a game. Former UCLA big Aday Mara is pounding the paint with 12.5 rebounds a game and do-everything big Yaxel Lendeborg — the No. 1 transfer in the offseason, out of UAB — is averaging 10.5 points, 4.5 rebounds, 2.5 assists and a block per game.
Tonight’s game is a rematch of last year’s nonconference matchup won by Michigan, 76-64. The Horned Frogs have won two straight, though those came after a stunning season-opening loss to New Orleans at home on Nov. 3. Sophomore forward David Punch leads TCU at 14 points and 6.7 rebounds a game.
The Wolverines are solid favorites to prevail on the road, giving 7.5 points, per BetMGM’s odds, with a -325 moneyline.
