Lions offense bullied by Eagles in 16-9 loss to drop out of NFC playoffs

PHILADELPHIA − The Detroit Lions‘ offensive outburst lasted one week.

The Lions are out of the NFC playoff picture with seven games to play, after losing Sunday night 16-9 to the Philadelphia Eagles at Lincoln Financial Field. Philadelphia (8-2) stays atop the NFC, while the Lions (6-4) dropped to eighth in the NFC playoff standings.

The Lions’ defense, despite missing three secondary starters, played well enough to win against an Eagles offense that is the highest-paid in the NFL, but the offense was bullied by the Eagles’ defense as Jared Goff saw his offensive line beat up front all day.

Goff missed on 16 of his final 18 pass attempts and finished 14-for-37 for 255 yards, a touchdown and interception off a deflected pass in the first quarter.

The running game had 21 attempts for 74 yards (3.5 yards per carry).

Coach Dan Campbell, calling the offensive pays for the second straight week, saw his Lions go 0-for-5 on fourth down, including short yardage stuffs in the first half on a fake punt and on fourth-and-1, and at the goal line on an incompletion.

Then, down 16-6 in the fourth quarter with 5:12 to play, he punted on fourth-and-10 from the Lions’ 42.

The Lions host the New York Giants (2-9) at 1 p.m. next Sunday at Ford Field to begin a three-game homestand.
