George Aivazoglou: “European basketball isn’t realising the value it should. It is the second most popular sport, as you know, on the continent — with around 270 million fans. It grows faster than football. And yet, when you look at the value generated by leagues combined — both pan-European and national — their contribution does not exceed 0.5 % of what the sports industry is in Europe. One of the reasons is the lack of presence in some large European cities with millions of inhabitants and significant basketball fandom. We see this when we bring NBA games to those places: tickets sell quickly and there’s lots of interest — but those cities do not have a team in the top competition. We have identified some of those cities as key areas for the new project.”
