Mike Kafka: New York Giants knew Cam Skattebo would be in 'staged' WWE brawl

Earlier this week, New York Giants rookie running back Cam Skattebo appeared on WWE’s Monday Night Raw at Madison Square Garden.

Skattebo, joined by several Giants teammates and comedian Andrew Schulz, was seated in the front row when a scripted “brawl” erupted involving them and WWE superstars Dominik Mysterio, Finn Balor, and JD McDonagh.

Although the confrontation was fully staged as part of the WWE storyline, the segment generated significant attention and discussion across sports media and beyond, particularly given that Skattebo is currently recovering from a serious ankle injury.

In response to the online reaction from fans and commentators, Skattebo addressed the situation on X to provide clarity.

Giants interim head coach Mike Kafka was asked about the players’ appearance and confirmed that the organization was informed in advance.

“Yeah, I knew they were going to the event. It was a rookie event. We have some team events that our support staffs put together for the rookies to kind of get out. So, I thought it was a cool thing. I know it was like a staged little brawl there,” Kafka told reporters on Wednesday.

“It was great to see Skatt on the pregame, on the sideline. His juice, his energy, you can feel it. I can feel it through the TV and through my phone when I was watching the clips. So, it’s a cool event for those guys to kind of get out and be out in the community.”

Asked if he knew the segment was staged, Kafka did not hesitate.

“Yes,” he said with a laugh.

When pressed on whether he had any concerns about Skattebo’s participation given his injury, Kafka expressed faith in his rookie.

“Yeah, I trust Skatt, and I trust our medical department, our medical staff to take great care of him,” he said.

Despite the considerable media buzz, the incident appears to have raised no internal concerns for the Giants. The organization not only approved the outing as part of a planned rookie event but also cleared Skattebo’s attendance in consultation with its medical staff.
