It wasn’t exactly a passing of the torch, but Carolina Panthers great Cam Newton has acknowledged a piece of greatness from quarterback Bryce Young.
Young had himself a performance for the ages this past weekend, throwing for 448 yards and three touchdowns in Carolina’s thrilling 30-27 win over the Atlanta Falcons. Those 448 passing yards were not only a career-high for the third-year signal-caller, but also a new record for the Panthers—surpassing Newton’s 432-yard outing back in 2011.
Newton, for first time since Sunday’s watershed showing, had a chance to speak on the record-breaking performance. Here’s how he reacted to Young’s heroics (and his dab) on Wednesday’s episode of 4th & 1 with Cam Newton . . .
Following the game, Young was asked how he felt about overtaking Newton for Carolina’s single-game mark. And, as expected, his reply was as professional as they come.
“Definitely an honor,” Young told reporters. “I have so much respect for Cam, for all that he’s accomplished for the player he is, all that stuff. So much respect for him. So hearing that is definitely an honor.”
Young’s day also earned him his first career NFC Offensive Player of the Week nod. He’s the first Panthers quarterback to capture that honor since . . . (you guessed it) . . . Newton.
