Patrick Mahomes is speaking out after fans believed Kansas City Chiefs head coach Andy Reid had slammed the athlete’s recent performance.
After the Chiefs’ 22-19 loss to the Denver Broncos on Sunday, November 16, Reid, 67, suggested during an interview with KMBC 9 that a teammate (without mentioning Mahomes by name) had chosen to pass the ball more often than he threw it.
On Wednesday, November 19, the quarterback, 30, appeared to address the controversy by telling reporters, “I’m just not making the throws, is pretty much the biggest thing. Guys are getting open and giving me chances to make the plays down the field.”
“Being better there and giving guys chances, it usually works out … You hit one deep throw and all of a sudden the offense opens up and then you’re able to hit other throws as well,” Mahomes continued. “I think we’ve always done a really good job of being able to take what’s there.”
“It’s just about hitting some of those deeper throws to loosen the defense up and then give us opportunities to throw the ball everywhere throughout the offense,” the dad of three — who shares children Sterling, 4, Patrick (“Bronze”), 2, and 10-month-old daughter Golden, with wife Brittany Mahomes — added.
During his initial KMBC 9 interview, Reid said: “We’re calling quite a few of the RPOs [run-pass options]. So, yesterday, they were giving us opportunities to throw the football, so we utilized the opportunities there. Those things end up being as good as a run for the other. We’re getting four-plus yards and you go with it.”
“But the runs are being called. Sometimes they get turned into passes in today’s world,” Reid added. “You know, that’s how it goes.”
