Am I really going to do a hoddle on a Geico commercial? Why yes I am.
I’m not sure why, but the US insurance company Geico has recently been re-airing a commercial that first hit television screens in 2018. It also happens to be one of my favourites ever. Check it out:
It’s a simple premise for an advert campaign Geico does from time to time. In this one the advert voice-over says “As long as soccer players celebrate with a slide, you can count on Geico saving you money.”
It’s simple and effective. But what really gets me more than anything is the commercial’s announcer delivering the colour commentary over the player (his name is Willingham) scoring a goal.
Here are a few bits:
- “This is history in the making! Sweet dreams, nighty night! Willingham tucks it in and puts the championship to bed!
- “No one ever saw this coming!“
- “Pressure?! What pressure?!”
It’s a brilliant advert. I’m not sure what it’s doing airing again in 2025, but I’m glad it is.
