Josh Allen admits Bills 'had a chance to win it' vs. the Texans

The Bills got cooked by the Texans and their NFL-best defense on Thursday Night Football by a final score of 19-23.

QB Josh Allen was 24 of 34 with 253 yards passing plus 20 yards rushing, and was held without a touchdown for the second time this season since a Week 2 win against the Jets. He had a season-low 5.4 net yards per attempt, an average completion of only 3.0 yards downfield, and his -0.23 expected points added per was good for his third-worst in the past five seasons.

“They had a good plan and we got to play better,” Allen said after the game. “We had a chance to win it there at the end, and got to find a way.”

The Texans’ defense had two interceptions and a forced fumble for three takeaways, and sacked Allen a career high eight times for 70 yards, adding 11 QB hits and 12 QB pressures, holding Buffalo to 0-2 in the red zone on the day. The Bills‘ 326 total yards of offense were their second-lowest of the season.

The pressure from the Texans’ defense ultimately proved too much, as Allen missed a wide-open Dawson Knox for what would have been a first down in the red zone and an opportunity to run the clock down and win the game. Instead, he forced a throw into coverage and an interception to seal the loss.

“Looking like man, just dropping back and just trying to get it to one of our open guys,” Allen noted regarding the play.

When pressed further on the topic, his frustration was again detectable.

“Yeah. Again, had a chance to win it there at the end, so we did a good job of staying in it. Defense bailed us out at times, and again, we drive in the ball on that last drive, and we’ve got to find a way to get him. We didn’t.”

After a big win and a historical offensive performance on Sunday, the Bills were back to not looking the part of a serious contender, as they have in their other three losses this season.

“Listen, I mean, hindsight’s 2020. Ultimately, we got to execute, and we didn’t do a good enough job of that tonight. Whatever situation, whatever circumstance, we got to we got to put our head down and find a way there, and on the field, we didn’t. That’s what it comes down to.”

A missed open man downfield and another missed opportunity in the win column have the Bills close to missing out on the opportunity for a No.1 seed and homefield advantage, not to mention their own division crown.
