Purdue's Fletcher Loyer claims uneven rims impacted shooting vs Memphis

NASSAU, Bahamas — Purdue basketball’s Fletcher Loyer does not come across as an unstable conspiracy theorist, but he suspected something is amiss at the Baha Mar Championships.

Loyer went 0 for 5 from the field, missing four 3-point attempts, in the first half of Thursday’s win over Memphis. He scored 18 in the second half, making 6 of 9 from the field and 4 of 6 from 3-point range.

The senior guard must have figured something out at halftime, right?

“It was the rim,” Loyer said. Using only his eyeballs to make this expert measurement, Loyer determined the rim Purdue shot on in the first half was “a little bit higher.”

Loyer, a 44.9% 3-point shooter over the past three seasons, wasn’t the only Boiler going cold from behind the arc in the first half. The whole team shot 28.6%.

If Loyer’s hypothesis is correct, Memphis should have the same issue shooting on that end of the floor, right? The Tigers, a 32.3% 3-point shooting team coming in, made three 3s before the game’s first media timeout while utilizing the supposedly correctly calibrated rims.

In the second half, after swapping ends with Purdue and shooting on those supposedly elevated rims: 1 of 10.

Forget the Bermuda Triangle. Someone needs to look into this Bahamian Cylinder.

In actuality, Memphis made only seven of its last 20 attempts overall in the second half. The Tigers looked pretty weary down the stretch, and tired legs tend to affect shooting.

On the other end, Purdue played with a better offensive rhythm throughout the second half. It assisted on 15 of 16 field goals in the second half after doing so on only five of 14 buckets before halftime.

We only have one game of data, though. Loyer’s theory — and we are really using that word loosely here — will be tested again Friday night.
