United face crucial December – January stretch
AFCON 2025 puts Ruben Amorim’s Manchester United system under serious threat
Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim is preparing for one of the most delicate phases of his first season in charge as the club braces for the loss of Noussair Mazraoui, Amad Diallo and Bryan Mbeumo during the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco (21 Dec — 18 Jan).
Mazraoui key pillar in Walid Regragui’s Morocco is among the most indispensable profiles in Amorim’s tactical setup making his absence particularly difficult to absorb.
“We will try to keep the players a little longer”

AFCON timing problem
Under current CAF regulations, clubs must release players two week before their national team’s first match.
For United that means losing all three player before the 8 December fixture vs Wolves right in the middle of congested run.
Amorim, however is attempting to negotiate delay until 15 December allowing the trio to stay through the league match against Bournemouth.
“There’re clear rules, but we’re trying to keep them bit longer” Amorim said before the Everton match. “It’s not entirely in our hands but we’ll speak with the national associations”..
His stance reflects the magnitude of the disruption United could face: three starter leaving simultaneously during decisive period in the Premier League & Europe.
Man United dey try negotiate with Cameroon, Morocco and Ivory Coast make dem delay Bryan Mbeumo, Noussair Mazraoui and Amad Diallo waka go Africa Cup of Nations.

Why Mazraoui is the hardest player to replace
Since arriving at Old Trafford, Noussair Mazraoui has become the perfect fit for Amorim’s 3-4-3 functioning as:
- A ball progressing inverted full back
- A third midfielder during build up
- A pressing trigger on the right lane
- A technical outlet when United overload the half spaces
His blend of passing accuracy, composure under pressure and defensive intelligence gives United numerical superiority in midfield (role that cannot simply be replicated)..

Amorim views December – January as window to send message internally giving U21 talents meaningful minutes in high pressure matches.
Mazraoui (Morocco), Amad (Ivory Coast) & Mbeumo (Cameroon) are all expected to play major roles for their countries at AFCON 2025.. leaving United exposed during period that could shape their season.
But Amorim insists the club will adapt:
