LSU football will have to wait another week to see if it lands its top target for the open head coach role. Per a statement released Friday by Ole Miss vice chancellor for intercollegiate athletics Keith Carter, a decision regarding Lane Kiffin’s future will be released next Saturday following the Rebels’ game against Mississippi State.
Kiffin emerged as the leading candidate for the Tigers in their head coach search. Currently in his sixth season with the Rebels, he holds a 116-53 overall record as a head coach with other stops at Tennessee, USC and Florida Atlantic. The Rebels are currently ranked No. 5 in the AP poll and finished in the national top-15 each of the last two seasons.
Ever since Brian Kelly’s dismissal after a blowout loss to Texas A&M at home, LSU has made headlines while organizing its approach to filling the vacancy. It appears the Tigers made major progress in their negotiations as Kiffin’s relatives visited both Baton Rouge and Gainesville as he’s also been in the mix for Florida’s head coach role.
Carter’s social media post brings a timeline to the public about when news regarding Kiffin’s future could be released.
How did social media react to Carter’s statement?
The responses to this announcement evince a fanbase that is fed up with @Lane_Kiffin. That anger is justified.
But @KeithCarterOM has made nothing but good decisions since becoming AD. He knows things we don’t. And he’s earned the benefit of the doubt. It’s a tough situation. https://t.co/ZLCeA4J68P

If the goal was to create the maximum amount of uncertainty and distraction for the biggest game of the year, nailed it https://t.co/8KHLErIBNw

Several social media users believe the announcement from Carter creates more distractions for the Rebels as they prepare to take on the Bulldogs and potentially make a run in the College Football Playoffs.

Lane Kiffin should have Ole Miss, LSU, Florida and Penn State hats on a table and put one on like a recruit. https://t.co/4wmyCoYpYa

Ole Miss fans are largely disgruntled about the situation with Kiffin but some social media users poked fun at the process by making predictions on who would step into the Rebels’ head coach role should Kiffin move on or suggesting Kiffin select his next coaching destination just as a recruit would pick where he’d play college football.
Everyone saying this means Lane is leaving but I feel the complete opposite. Wouldn’t this set up perfectly to announce you’re coming back to receive a heroes welcome and rally the troops for a playoff run? Why would you say anything if it wasn’t that? https://t.co/8X2D03SZ9K

Is Kiffin staying at Ole Miss a possibility? Some social media users think so, but no definitive announcement either way has come from any party involved with the matter.
