MSU-Iowa: Can Spartans pull off massive road upset?

Can Michigan State football pull off the massive upset to get their first win in Big Ten play on Saturday? That’s what the Spartans Wire crew is here to answer.

Michigan State travels to Iowa on Saturday in search of their first Big Ten win of the year. The Spartans have lost seven straight games, and are 3-7 overall and 0-7 in Big Ten play. Michigan State is officially out of contention for a bowl game and this will be one of their final two games this year.

Iowa is looking to bounce back from back-to-back losses the past two weeks against Oregon and USC. The Hawkeyes are 6-4 overall and 4-3 in Big Ten play this year.

Let’s see what our Spartans Wire crew thinks about that happening in our weekly Michigan State football predictions below:

Andrew Brewster

Michigan State's Makhi Frazier runs for a gain against Penn State during the first quarter on Saturday, Nov. 15, 2025, at Spartan Stadium in East Lansing.

Prediction: Michigan State – 3, Iowa 24

MSU might be starting their third string quarterback. They’ve done a decent job not giving up through a terrible year. But I think the wheels will finally fall off here.

Cory Linsner

Michigan State's Jalen Satchell celebrates a sack against Penn State during the third quarter on Saturday, Nov. 15, 2025, at Spartan Stadium in East Lansing.

Prediction: Michigan State 3, Iowa 41

Iowa may be 6-4, but they are a much better team than what the record shows. Losing to Oregon by 2, Iowa State by 3, USC by 5 and Indiana by 5, Iowa is a couple of breaks away from being a playoff contender. Iowa poses a massive physical challenge on both sides of the ball for MSU and this is where I believe the wheels fall off the bus.

Prediction: Michigan State 10, Iowa 34

Is this the end of the Jonathan Smith era? Maybe, maybe not. But I don’t like the Spartans’ chances in this game regardless. I expect Michigan State to continue to fight in this game and keep it in striking distance throughout the first half, but eventually the dam is going to collapse. It also becomes easier for that dam to collapse when you have nothing to play for anymore.
