John Mateer praises Isaiah Sategna III for long touchdown reception

The Oklahoma Soonersdefeated the Missouri Tigers 17-6 on Saturday, despite another less-than-stellar performance from their offense. However, it was one big play from that offense that helped turn the momentum in OU’s favor in the second quarter.

After a first quarter where Mizzou had gone down and gotten a field goal on a long opening drive, the Tigers drove into Sooner territory again and defensive back Peyton Bowen blocked a field goal attempt that would have made it 6-0 Missouri. At that time, OU had -7 yards of total offense.

On a third and seven from their own 13-yard line, quarterback John Mateer made a sidearm throw to wide receiver Isaiah Sategna III, who caught the ball for the first down and sprinted all the way home for a touchdown to put Oklahoma ahead 7-3. It was a lead that the Sooners wouldn’t relinquish, and the momentum shift in the second quarter led to Mateer’s other touchdown pass of the game, this one to wide receiver Javonnie Gibson.

“Yeah, it changed everything,” Mateer said of the long touchdown. “I think we finally popped one loose, and obviously, it wasn’t going real well before that, and that was a big third-down conversion, like it was third down. We needed that one, and so it flips everything.”

Oklahoma’s defense turned in another impressive performance to beat the Tigers, and if Mateer and the offense can turn a corner, they can make it a lot easier for the Sooners to win games by playing complementary football. The Sooners didn’t do much of that against Missouri, but the big touchdown play was a total shift of momentum that ultimately was one of the plays that helped the Sooners get one step closer to a berth in the College Football Playoff.
