Notre Dame’s 70-7 blowout win over the Syracuse Orange on Saturday set all kinds of records.
The No. 9 Fighting Irish had never before scored 35 points in a quarter. Not once in Notre Dame’s storied history had that happened. The most points Notre Dame ever scored in a quarter was 47 versus Rose Poly in a 102-0 win in 1914.
Box scores are unreliable before the 1950s, but Notre Dame either scored the most first-half points it ever has, or the most since at least 1943.
The 70 points put up by the Fighting Irish are the most since they scored 69 against Georgia Tech in 1977, and the first time they had 70 or more since beating Haskell 73-0 in 1932.
The defense set a program record with 16 tackles for loss.
Running back Jeremiyah Love is the third FBS player since 1996 to have threetouchdowns and 170 yards in fewer than 8 carries. Clyde Edwards-Helaire did it in 2019 against Arkansas and Desmond Ridder did it in 2020 against SMU.
Love had his sixth two-touchdown game this season. The Notre Dame record is seven, set by Jerome Bettis in 1991. Love ties Vagas Ferguson and Allen Pinkett.
Notre Dame is the sixth FBS team with two pick-sixes in the same game this season.
The last time Notre Dame had its first three scores come via defense or special teams was in 2002 against Purdue.
Finally, the Irish handed Syracuse its worst loss since 1893, when it fell to Union 66-0.
The 70 points scored by @NDFootball today against Syracuse sets the program’s modern record, breaking the 69-point record against Georgia Tech in 1977.
The 70 points are the most since the Irish defeated Haskell 73-0 in 1932.

The game-by-game boxscores become unreliable until the 1950s… so it is possible that there is a game in the 1940s that surpassed the number, but the 49 points scored in the first half by the Irish today are the most for @NDFootball since at least 1943

Notre Dame is the 6th FBS team to have two interception returns for a touchdown in a game this season and joins Missouri (vs. Miss. St) and Oregon (Okla. St.) to have 2 INT returns vs. Power 4 team.

Before today’s game, the last time @NDFootball saw the defense (or special teams) score the first 3 TDs of a game was vs. Purdue in 2002. In the 24-7 win the Irish returned two fumbles in the 2Q and returned an INT in the 4th quarter.
