MSU women's soccer makes program history with Sweet 16 win

Michigan State women’s soccer made program history on Sunday, advancing to the Elite 8 of the NCAA Tournament for the first time. To make it there, the Spartans defeated Colorado, 2-1.

Both goals for the Spartans came by way of Bella Najera, who scored in the opening minute of the game, to set the tone, and added the game winner at the 55:20 mark in the second half. Her first goal was assisted by Sofia Beerworth.

The Spartans had made the Sweet 16 the past two years, but were unable to get over the hump to an Elite 8, but they did it on Sunday.

The next step for the Spartans is awaiting the winner of a Sweet 16 matchup between the No. 1 seed Stanford and BYU. That game will take place at 4 p.m. ET in Stanford, California.

If the Cardinal win, the Spartans ill travel to California for the Elite 8 matchup. If BYU wins, the Cougars will travel to East Lansing to play at DeMartin Stadium. The game will take place on either Friday, Nov. 28, or Saturday, Nov. 29.
