Broncos ‘not in the mix’ for free agent WR who played for Sean Payton

Brandin Cooks won’t be reuniting with Sean Payton.

After being cut by the New Orleans Saints, veteran wide receiver Brandin Cooks cleared waivers, making him a free agent. The Denver Broncos are “not in the mix” to sign Cooks, according to the Denver Gazette‘s Chris Tomasson.

Cooks (5-10, 193 pounds) originally entered the league as a first-round pick out of Oregon State in 2014 with the Saints, who were coached by Payton at the time. Cooks later had stints with four other NFL teams before returning to New Orleans this offseason.

The Broncos have clearly been looking for more help at receiver, but Cooks apparently won’t be added to the rotation that features Courtland Sutton, Marvin Mims, Pat Bryant, Lil’Jordan Humphrey and Troy Franklin.

Before being cut by the Saints, Cooks hauled in 19 receptions for 165 yards through 10 games this fall. He has totaled 10,038 all-purpose yards and scored 62 touchdowns in 168 career games.
