The rebuilding New York Jets hosted an intriguing reclamation project on a free-agent visit on Tuesday.
Former first-round cornerback Kaiir Elam visited East Rutherford, according to a report by ESPN. Should the Jets (2-9) consider signing Elam?

Elam initially entered the NFL as a first-round pick (No. 23 overall) of the Buffalo Bills during the 2022 NFL draft. The former Florida standout never met expectations in Buffalo. His career was first derailed by an injury during his sophomore (2023) season.
By his third campaign in 2024, the BIlls had made Elam a rotational defender. He was called into action against the Kansas City Chiefs in the AFC Championship Game. Elam struggled mightily against the Chiefs’ receivers, and was scapegoated by the Bills fanbase following the disappointing defeat.
The Bills then traded Elam alongside with a 2025 sixth-round pick to the Dallas Cowboys this past offseason in exchange for a 2025 fifth-round selection and 2026 seventh-round pick.
Elam earned a sizable 460 snaps with the Cowboys this year, but they waived him earlier this week. It’s not encouraging that he failed to stick in a lackluster secondary.
The Jets are rebuilding their roster. They have long-term holes at cornerback after trading Sauce Gardner to the Indianapolis Colts. Jarvis Brownlee and Azareye’h Thomas are probably the only future solutions at the position, though veteran Brandon Stephens is also signed through 2027.
Elam may be a first-round bust who never recovers, but the rebuilding Jets have nothing to lose by bringing him in.
