Atlanta Hawks rookie forward Asa Newell debuted in the G League on Wednesday, leading the College Park Skyhawks in a home loss to the Long Island Nets.
Newell produced 19 points, four assists and two rebounds in the 125-101 loss at the Gateway Center Arena. He finished by shooting 7-of-10 from the field, including 3-of-4 from 3-point range, in 27 minutes as the Skyhawks dropped to 1-4 to begin the season.
The 23rd pick in the NBA draft got on the board midway through the first quarter on a layup assisted by Dwight Murray Jr. He found success in the paint on a few other occasions, including a one-handed slam out of a pick and roll later in the period.

Newell has played sporadically with the Hawks, averaging 3.9 points and 1.6 rebounds in 12 appearances for coach Quin Snyder. He is one of seven rookies to register a double-double this season after recording 12 points and 10 rebounds on Oct. 25.
With the Hawks off until Friday, the team opted to send him to the Skyhawks to log extended minutes in the G League. The assignment can be a good opportunity for him to stay in a rhythm on the court and see valuable time against high-level competition.
Newell has impressed in the early going and earned the trust of his teammates, like Trae Young. The team will continue to explore opportunities for him in the G League as it looks to maximize his development throughout the season.
