Students protect Tommy Trojan, Bruin Bear statues ahead of USC-UCLA rivalry game

It’s one of the most famous crosstown rivalries.

UCLA and USC are going head-to-head in its regular-season finale Saturday for the ultimate college football showdown.

“I’m excited about this one here,” said UCLA Bruins Interim Head Coach Tim Skipper. “As a kid, I always watched the UCLA-SC game. It always mattered. We watched the video as a team just to go over the history of it because we have so many transfers and things. I wanted to make sure everybody knew how significant this game was.”

All this week, students from both schools have been keeping a close eye on their iconic statues to prevent vandalism.

On the USC campus, the Tommy Trojan statue is wrapped in silver duct tape for extra protection. One group of students told Eyewitness News they’ve been camping out at the statue all week with rotating shift schedules.

Over at UCLA, the Bruin Bear is protected in a black box.

The game will be held at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum and kickoff is at 4:30 p.m.
