A short time ago, HuskerOnline reported that Matt Rhule has released John Butler from his position as Defensive Coordinator for the Nebraska Cornhuskers. He had been with the program only two seasons hired in 2024 as the defensive secondary coach. His current tenure as DC has ended after only one season.

His defense excelled in some areas finishing the regular season ranked 2nd nationally in fewest passing yards allowed per games but often struggled to stop the run, most notable against Michigan, Southern Cal and Penn State. They also tended to allow multiple long drives of 50 yards or more giving up four or more the majority of their games.

The final straw appears to have been blowout losses to Penn State (37-10) and Iowa (40-16) in the final two contests of the 2025 regular season. Iowa was especially concerning given their offense was ranked 120th in total yards out of 136 FBS teams.

An official announcement is expected later in the day including who will serve as the interim coordinator through the bowl game. Associate Head Coach Phil Snow would have to be considered a likely candidate.
