The 2026 World Cup draw is set for Friday, Dec. 5, revealing the groups and bracket for the 48-team tournament taking place next summer in North America.
The field is nearly set with 42 countries qualified and the final six spots up for grabs in March’s qualification playoffs. MetLife Stadium in New Jersey will host the World Cup final, the eighth match of the tournament for the two countries that make it to the end.
Defending champion Lionel Messi and Argentina will be a big draw throughout the tournament and surely will draw monster viewership throughout. Who will they have to beat to repeat in 2026?
Here’s a look at some Americas-centric finals we would love to see on July 19:
Those involving Argentina
Argentina vs. France: Rematch of the 2022 World Cup final, considered one of the best games in history.
Argentina vs. Brazil: The greatest rivalry in international soccer?
Argentina vs. Portugal: Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo, one last time.
Argentina vs. England: Forty years after “The Hand of God,” England could get the ultimate revenge.
For Americans and/or USMNT homers
USA vs. Argentina: Dethroning the champions would be the perfect way for the U.S. men to win their first World Cup, played on home soil.
USA vs. England: The adversaries of the American Civil War faced off in the group stage of the 2010 and 2022 World Cups, both showdowns ending in a draw.
USA vs. Mexico: This hypothetical final at MetLife Stadium would provide an absolutely unparalleled atmosphere.
USA vs. Canada/anyone in Concacaf: The USMNT’s rivalry against Canada isn’t as heated, but a North American derby would be pretty sweet.
