The New York high school football season heads into its final week with the NYSPHSAA state championship games taking place this upcoming weekend at Syracuse’s JMA Wireless Dome.
Second to last set of Empire State high school football rankings as the state championships begin taking place has Iona Preparatory School as New York’s No. 1 high school football team as they defeated St. Francis in a 42-21 decision for the New York Catholic state title. Here is the latest New York high school football Top 25 rankings, according to Massey as of Dec. 2.
1. Iona Preparatory School Gaels
Iona Prep (11-1) fully avenged their only loss of the season after defeating Monsignor Farrell, 42-20, for the New York Catholic High School Football League (NYCHSFL) championship and then beat No. 5 ranked St. Francis, 42-21, for the Catholic League state title last weekend.
The Gaels started the regular season with a bang, halting the Somers Tuskers’ winning streak and routed them, 37-7, at the Hero’s Bowl Classic and then followed it up with a 53-43 victory over a very good Paramus Catholic team out of New Jersey.
Quarterback Julian Guzman has led the way for Iona Prep’s offense, throwing for 2,380 yards and 21 touchdowns through 12 games and adding 804, 11 scores on the ground. Running back Crew Davis, a three-star prospect committed to North Carolina, has spearheaded to the Gaels’ efforts on the offensive side of the ball with 1,305 yards and 16 touchdowns on the ground this season.
2. Monsignor Farrell Lions
Monsignor Farrell (9-2) ran into a buzzsaw in the New York Catholic High School Football League (NYCHSFL) title tilt when they faced top-ranked Iona Prep a couple weeks ago, falling 42-20 in the rematch.
Sophomore quarterback Bryce Moye has been solid behind center this season as the signal caller completed 117 of 157 passes for 1,765 yards, 18 touchdowns and just one pick. Senior running back Kevin Gumb Jr. has been the workhorse out of the backfield this fall, with the tailback rushing for 1,276 yards and 15 touchdowns.
3. Rye Garnets
Continuing to make their way through the NYSPHSAA Class A playoffs with ease is the Rye Garnets (13-0), which took care of business last week in a 35-7 victory over Cornwall Central in a state semifinal matchup. Now the Garnets are one win away from taking home a state title.
On Friday they will take on Brighton (12-2) with a chance to win the Class A state championship in Syracuse.
The Garnets have received superb play out of the quarterback position in senior Carson Miller, who heading into the Class A state championship game has completed 155 of 204 (76 percent) passes for 3,279 yards and 35 touchdowns.
4. Syracuse Christian Brothers Academy Brothers
Christian Brothers Academy (12-0) made it four straight NYSPHSAA Class AA playoff wins as they cruised past Bennett, 34-14, in a state semifinal.
The 2025 season kicked off with a dominating 28-7 victory over Whitesboro to start off with plenty of optimism and that’s never wavered ever since. Looking at the gap between CBA’s scoring versus their opponents is wide as the Brothers have out-scored the opposition 525-107 through 12 contests.
The Brothers go into the state championship round of the NYSPHSAA Class AA playoffs and will take on No. 20 ranked Saratoga Springs this Saturday.
5. St. Francis Red Raiders
St. Francis (10-2) was back on the field this past Saturday against top-ranked Iona Prep for the Catholic League state championship on Saturday afternoon in New Rochelle, falling to the Gaels, 42-21.
When it comes to high-powered offenses, the Red Raiders can keep up with the best of ’em in the Empire State. The Red Raiders had received solid quarterback play all season long from junior Trent Buttles, who has led this offense to 444 points (37 points per game) this fall.
Entering this season, the Red Raiders were a favorite to reach the state championship game for the first time since 2018. The Red Raiders received big performances throughout the season from Domonic Cook, Jr. and Mason Anderson.
