Cowboys, $97 million defender's uncertain future together beginning to play out

Things haven’t gone well for Trevon Diggs since signing his five-year, $97 million extension back in July of 2023. He played just two games before falling to a season ending knee injury that year. The following season he managed to limp through 11 substandard games before another knee injury brought on the same season-ending fate.

Prior to the current season, Diggs was criticized by Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones for his commitment to rehab. Then following training camp, he saw Micah Parsons, his best friend and closest ally, traded away with a suddenness rarely seen in today’s NFL.

When the 2025 season kicked off Diggs looked less explosive, less interested and overall ill-fitting for Matt Eberflus’ defense. While he managed to contribute in six games this season, his stat sheet sat abnormally barren with neither an interception nor pass deflection anywhere in sight. If anything, the “at home accident” that landed the former All-Pro on IR the last few weeks looked more like a mercy killing than a tragedy. Many speculated fans had seen the last of Diggs in a Cowboys uniform given the situation.

Now there’s word Diggs is back. Just days ago, Jones predicted Diggs’ readiness for Week 14 in Detroit and Diggs himself has greenlit his physical status saying, “I feel way better now,” and “I feel ready.”

Diggs’ availability will ultimately come down to the training and coaching staff. A healthy and rightminded Diggs would be welcomed on just about any NFL roster. The problem is that version of Diggs hasn’t been seen since early 2023.

Given Digg’s contract situation, his future looks cloudier than tap water. The Cowboys can save over $12 million in cap space by releasing him this winter and they have what appears to be viable replacement pieces already in place on the roster.

Diggs might be signed for three more seasons but for all intents and purposes, he’s in a contract year right now because Diggs is trying out for the Cowboys and the entire NFL. How he finishes the year will have a major influence on what kind of deal he can get in 2026. It’s possible he could even stick in Dallas if he plays well enough.

All things considered, it’s an ideal situation for both the Cowboys and Diggs to be in. Dallas has a healthy and motivated star player returning to the field. They have depth behind him to give them options but they aren‘t financially required to stick with Diggs any longer than they want to beyond this season.

Diggs returns to play behind arguably the best front five he’s ever had in his Cowboys tenure, which should help him in run support and coverage. He’s also more likely to play in a system he’s comfortable with since Matt Eberflus is more open to calling man defense in recent weeks.

Whether Diggs returns this week or next, expect to see a different player this time. It’s in everyone’s best interests.
