It may be true that New England quarterback Drake Maye is the odds-on favorite to win the NFL MVP this season, but he just won his first AFC offensive player of the week award. Meanwhile, Jordan Love is already on No. 2.
The Green Bay Packers quarterback dazzled in his team’s 31-24 victory over Detroit on Thanksgiving, netting him his second NFC offensive player of the week honor this year on Wednesday, Dec. 3.
Love threw for four touchdowns and 234 yards on 18-of-30 passing, good for a 124.2 passer rating. Two of those throws were fourth-down touchdown strikes. It’s the fourth player of the week honor in his career and second in six weeks; his Week 8 showing against mentor Aaron Rodgers and the Pittsburgh Steelers also merited the honor.
It marks the third Packers win of a weekly award this season. Micah Parsons was named defensive player of the week in Week 7 after the team’s win over Arizona, a game in which he had three sacks.
Love also won twice in 2023, closing the season with back-to-back wins in the final two weeks of the season — wins over Minnesota and Chicago.
The Packers defense also did an admirable job on the reigning NFC offensive player of the week, Lions running back Jahmyr Gibbs, who had won the award twice in three weeks. He was held to 68 yards rushing and three catches for 18 yards one week after racking up 219 yards rushing and 11 catches for 45 yards in a win over the New York Giants.
Maye, who led the Patriots to a 10th straight win, joined Love as a weekly winner along with Buffalo cornerback Christian Benford (AFC defense), Seattle linebacker Ernest Jones (NFC defense), Cincinnati kicker Evan McPherson (AFC special teams) and Tampa Bay punter Riley Dixon (NFC special teams).
University of Wisconsin alumnus Jonathan Taylor, now a running back for the Colts, has won AFC offensive player of the week three times this season.
